One thing that really causes people problems these days is perception, and the projection of perception upon ones daily life. These days people talk about the economy and how tough things seems to be, how its hard to find a job or earn money. This is just a negative perception based on beliefs that are projected upon us through popular media. This does not mean that it is what your economy is like. Perceptions can be changed, based on what experiences you would like to see. From Buddhist philosophy we can see that the mind is the creator of our suffering.
Perception is an extension of the minds, biased judgement on things we interact with. ultimately we have a choice. We can choose to perceive as others perceive, "The economy sucks and it is a struggle to survive." or we can change that to the perception, that "The economy may be bad, however, things are great for me. I have been given the opportunity to try something different in life." As a personal example, "I am a Acupuncturist practicing in the state of California, however, I also repair computers and cell phones part time. I am also going for a Hypnosis certification, and I am also working on multiple websites, in addition to developing online class material for teaching qi gong." Of course, I also have other skill sets that I can fall back on.
With a narrow perception, many people will attach themselves to their job label. For example, "I am a Software Test Engineer" This is a very limiting belief and perception mechanism.. This also severely limits the persons true potential. You can change this perception to "I am a person who has Software Test Engineer skills" This perception is a much better one since, one can be allowed to grow and do other jobs, without having a limiting mindset.
Although, times may seem tough based on your perception, why would you want to always choose to perceive things in a negative way. You can always find something negative in life. However, it is much easier to find 1 positive thing about people, things or situations in life. In other words, why do you want to seek out negative things and be unhappy, when you can see that it does not help you as a person. If you are not going to do anything about the negative situation, then why bother thinking about it and obsessing about it. Is it not a waste of time? It is a better idea to just perceive it in a different manner. instead of "This sucks, I am late for work." You can change it to "I am late for work, however, I have more time to enjoy listening to music in the car," or "I am late for work, however, I could have been the one in the traffic accident, if I left on time."
The moral of the story is that, before you get angry, irritated, unhappy, depressed, or anything that resembles emotional stress, use your brain, logic and wisdom. Ask yourself, how this perception helps you? If it does not, then change it. Life is way too short to be unhappy.
Look at the better traits of people, things and situations, you will be happier.
